Which three countries were allowed to become members of the EC in 1972?
Bet your knowledge and answer Start the quizCorrect answer
The United Kingdom, Denmark and Ireland
Explanation
In 1961, the United Kingdom wanted to become a member of the EC, but French President Charles de Gaulle disliked the British close ties to the US and therefore refused to accept the United Kingdom's admission. Charles de Gaulle feared losing leadership within the EC. It was therefore not until 1972, when Denmark and Ireland also followed suit. The three countries were admitted as members on 1 January 1973.
